In a significant plea for justice, a delegation of prominent women's rights activists has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging expedited action on the Ugrappa Committee report for swift justice for victims of sexual assault and murder in Dharmasthala. The call comes amid ongoing investigations by the Special Investigation Team into alleged disappearances in the temple town.
The delegation, representing the 'Who Are the Culprits?' movement, praised the Karnataka government's revival of the Ugrappa Committee's suggestions for combating violence against women. The report, assembled under former MP V S Ugrappa in 2019, exposes systemic police malfunctioning, such as custodial deaths and corruption, recommending reforms for accountability in police operations.
The activists commended the formation of the SIT and demanded its independence. They urged thorough reinvestigation into closed cases, accountability for negligent officials, and broader measures for women's safety across Karnataka. The movement underscores the importance of strengthening justice systems to sustain responses against violence.
