In a perplexing incident, a young merchant navy cadet, Karandeep Singh Rana from Dehradun, disappeared on September 20 while serving on an oil tanker off Sri Lanka's coast. The cadet's last verified location was near the ship's portside lifeboat area, where he performed routine photographic tasks.
An independent probe by maritime investigators confirmed that the site maintained proper safety measures, though it was beyond CCTV coverage. Despite exhaustive searches coordinated by local and international maritime authorities, Cadet Rana remains unaccounted for, prompting the company to extend support to his family.
The Rana family, backed by state officials, had earlier sought intervention from the Uttarakhand Chief Minister and central authorities. A comprehensive marine and aerial search lasting over 96 hours involved multiple vessels and Sri Lankan helicopters, yet yielded no breakthrough in the cadet's mysterious disappearance.
