Eight individuals have tragically lost their lives following a helicopter crash in Indonesia's West Kalimantan province, confirmed officials on Thursday. The wreckage was discovered in a secluded forest, as reported by Xinhua news agency in collaboration with the Indonesian National Police.

Lieutenant Colonel Nurrachman Gindha Dradhizya, a rescue official, stated that recovery missions are ongoing at the crash site. 'Four bodies have been successfully evacuated and placed in body bags, while three others remain inside the helicopter wreckage,' he reported. The effort to locate the final victim continues, according to Xinhua.

The ill-fated aircraft, identified as a PT Matthew Air Airbus H-130, carried eight passengers, as indicated by the flight manifest. Operations were halted due to nightfall and harsh terrain, but are scheduled to recommence on Friday morning, involving cutting through the wreckage to recover trapped bodies.

Earlier, the Indonesian National Police activated a joint rescue operation upon the discovery of helicopter fragments in Sekadau's dense forests. An Indonesian Air Force Super Puma helicopter initially spotted the debris, believed to be part of the aircraft's tail, around three kilometers from the last known contact point.

Edy Prakoso, Deputy for Operations and Preparedness at the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), noted, 'Aerial reconnaissance has identified the likely crash location. Coordinates have been dispatched to ground units to aid the mission.' Ground teams, with local assistance, face arduous terrain and volatile weather in pursuit of recovery efforts, as residents had earlier reported an explosion in the Bukit Puntak area.

Ambulances have been stationed in Hulu Peniti village to assist the ongoing operations. (ANI)
