The Taliban-led Afghanistan administration has unveiled plans to build dams on the Kunar River, a crucial waterway flowing into Pakistan, days after recent border clashes between the two nations.
Deputy Information and Culture Minister, Muhajer Farahi, announced on social media that Taliban Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada has directed the Ministry of Water and Energy to commence construction without waiting for foreign contractors. The ministry has been tasked with securing agreements with Afghan companies to accelerate the project.
This development comes as Pakistan and Afghanistan, through mediation by Qatar and Turkiye, agreed to an 'immediate ceasefire' following the clashes, with commitments to further dialogue aimed at ensuring sustained peace and regional stability.
