FIFA Unites: Women's Series Moves to Morocco Amid Afghanistan Team's New Identity
A FIFA-organized women's soccer tournament, featuring the refugee team from Afghanistan, shifts location from the UAE to Morocco. The event, including teams from UAE, Chad, and Libya, marks the first tournament for 'Afghan Women United,' formed following the Taliban's ban on women's sports in Afghanistan.
In a significant change, FIFA has relocated a women's soccer tournament involving Afghanistan's refugee team from the UAE to Morocco. The four-team friendly competition, part of the 'FIFA Unites: Women's Series,' will now commence on Sunday.
This tournament, initially planned for October 23-29 in Dubai, features national women's teams from the UAE, Chad, and Libya. The Afghanistan women's refugee team, renamed 'Afghan Women United,' was formed after the Taliban banned women's sports, causing players to flee the country.
FIFA expressed gratitude to Morocco's football federation for hosting the event, noting the importance of the tournament for the Afghan team, mostly comprised of former players now residing in Australia. Meanwhile, Afghanistan's men's team remains unaffected by such political upheavals.
