In Nanded, the distribution of drinking water in non-sealed jars is causing significant concern due to inadequate purity and hygiene checks, especially during the peak wedding season, officials reported on Friday.
Private water filtering plants have rapidly expanded across both urban and rural zones, raising alarms. "Despite the claim of purified water distribution, many operators provide water in jars that are highly unhygienic. These containers frequently have layers of dirt and algae," said local resident Pawan Jagdamwar.
Health experts warn that such conditions could lead to serious disease outbreaks, such as jaundice, typhoid, and gastroenteritis. Although the Food and Drug Administration regulates sealed bottled water, it clarified that monitoring jar water suppliers is the responsibility of local governments, such as gram panchayats and municipal councils.
