The European Union's latest sanctions against Russia have sparked controversy, particularly concerning the restriction of hydrocarbons. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed grave concerns on Friday about the potential global impacts.
Announced on Thursday, the sanctions package comes amid a turbulent geopolitical landscape, notably affecting energy resources already in short supply worldwide. The move followed Slovakia and Hungary’s agreement to lift their opposition after the oil flowed through the Druzhba pipeline resumed.
Zakharova highlighted that these measures could devastate developing countries by inflating energy prices and jeopardizing food security due to additional fertilizer restrictions. In response, Russia has vowed 'tough' counteractions against the EU’s sanctions.
