Dutch Activists Challenge Shell in Landmark Climate Lawsuit
A Dutch climate activist group has filed a lawsuit demanding Shell halt new oil and gas projects. The group claims Shell's activities contribute to climate change, despite profits from fossil fuels. The case builds on years of legal battles urging Shell to reduce emissions.
A Dutch climate activist group filed a new lawsuit against Shell, demanding an immediate halt to investments in new oil and gas projects. The lawsuit argues that Shell's focus on fossil fuels undermines efforts to curb climate change, despite the company’s profitable energy operations following the Ukraine war.
Shell's critics, including Friends of the Earth Netherlands, argue that continued investment in oil and gas fields exacerbates climate disruption. Despite previous rulings urging emission reductions, Shell plans to sustain material oil output beyond 2030, stating the global economy's reliance on fossil fuels poses challenges to a complete withdrawal.
The court case stems from years-long legal efforts to hold energy giants accountable for their climate impact. Previously, Dutch courts have ruled on Shell's responsibility to cut emissions, but the new lawsuit presses further against future oil and gas investments. A hearing date is yet to be announced.
