Revamping Wheat Procurement: A Boost for Delhi's Farmers

After a five-year hiatus, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) will recommence the procurement of wheat in Delhi, a move facilitated by the intervention of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) on Tuesday.
The procurement initiative, set to begin at Narela and Najafgarh mandis on April 24, seeks to bolster the city's public distribution system and has been previously paused since 2021. The decision, endorsed by the Centre, aims to provide a fair platform for local farmers.
The capital's wheat production, which amounts to 80,000 metric tonnes annually, exceeds local needs and generates a marketable surplus. Gupta expressed gratitude for the Centre's cooperation, emphasizing the move's role in enhancing farmers' income security and welfare.
