A significant fire erupted at Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd's (HPCL) newly constructed Rajasthan refinery, only a day before its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The incident, occurring near the crude distillation unit, caused thick black smoke to billow into the air but was extinguished after two hours without any reported casualties.
The planned inauguration for this mega oil refinery and petrochemical complex, boasting a capacity of 9 million tonnes annually, was consequently postponed. An announcement from the Union Petroleum Ministry confirmed the delay and mentioned an investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the fire and to implement corrective measures.
This refinery is designed as a complex unit capable of high efficiency, aligning with India's strategy to bolster energy security and reduce import dependence. Once operational, it will produce vital fuels and petrochemicals critical to various industries. Opposition voices, however, noted concerns regarding safety protocols and project delays.
