The global wind energy sector reached new heights in 2025, installing an unprecedented 165 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity—a 40% increase over the previous year, according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). This milestone underlines the industry's robustness amid volatile oil markets and economic uncertainties.
In its 2026 report, the GWEC highlights Asia's dominance, with China and India leading the charge by adding 126 GW together, contributing significantly to the global total. Meanwhile, Europe, North America, Africa, and the Middle East also registered notable increases, pushing global wind capacity to 1,299 GW.
Ben Backwell, CEO of GWEC, emphasized the sector's rapid acceleration and its crucial role in meeting renewable energy demands. With countries like the USA, India, and Brazil making significant strides, the wind industry is on track to exceed the 2 Terawatt (TW) landmark by 2030, setting a new benchmark for sustainable energy initiatives worldwide.
