Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed concerns from opposition members about the perceived dilution of the Southern states' influence in the Lok Sabha due to the expansion of seats intended to implement the Women's Reservation Act. Shah claimed that the number of seats will grow by about 50%, maintaining the southern states' representation proportionally.
Shah clarified misconceptions during a Lok Sabha debate on three bills, including one for the early implementation of women's reservation. He highlighted that the rise in seats will not diminish the power of southern states. Referring to various states, he explained statistical increases in representation, ensuring there would be no loss in influence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attempted to alleviate fears related to constituency delimitations. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Modi asserted that the decision-making process would remain unbiased and equitable for all regions, ensuring proportional representation persists. The dialogue aimed to bring consensus on the bills, seen as crucial for enhancing women's roles in governance.
