In a bold stand against the government's proposals, leaders of the INDIA bloc have voiced disapproval of the delimitation bill connected to Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam 2023. This legislation aims to reserve 33% of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, but opposition figures argue it compromises representation in southern and northeastern states.
Gathering at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's residence in Delhi, prominent figures such as Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav attended. The bloc criticized the move as politically driven, asserting it marginalizes opposition voices. Kharge voiced concerns over the government's tactics, highlighting the need for a united parliamentary opposition against the current legislation process.
Echoing these sentiments, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh criticized the use of delimitation as a strategy to alter representation unfairly, particularly affecting southern states. As the government plans to adjust seat distribution in the Lok Sabha, the INDIA bloc continues to push for women's reservation without accompanying delimitation amendments.
