The Indian Defence Ministry has embarked on a crucial project to design and develop a 1,000-kg aerial bomb, similar to the Mk-84, intended to strengthen self-reliance in defense production. Senior officials have disclosed that the project will unfold in two phases, with the first centered around the design and development of six prototypes, complete with tail units and other necessary equipment.
The second phase will involve procurement, starting with a commercial Request for Proposal (RFP) issued to qualifying development agencies. The bomb system is expected to work with both Russian and Western-origin aircraft in the Indian Air Force's (IAF) arsenal. An Expression of Interest (EoI) has been released under the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020 to invite design, development, and procurement proposals from eligible Indian entities, potentially involving foreign collaboration under specific conditions.
The project aims to accomplish at least 50% indigenous content, with a total of 600 bombs planned for procurement. The process involves prototype development, user trials, and eventual contract finalization, estimated to span 2.5 years. The IAF will support this initiative, conducting trials within India and tapping local firms to boost 'Aatmanirbharta' in the defense sector.
