The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reported a significant return of Rs 2,000 banknotes, with 98.45% withdrawn since its May 2023 announcement. The total value circulation dropped dramatically from Rs 3.56 lakh crore to Rs 5,501 crore by March 2026.

Following the withdrawal announcement, the RBI provided services for exchanging these notes at their issue offices and allowed deposits into bank accounts since October 2023. In addition, citizens can use India Post services to send notes to RBI offices for account crediting.

Despite the withdrawal, the RBI confirmed that the Rs 2,000 notes continue to be recognized as legal tender, ensuring they remain valid for transactions.
