IEA’s Unprecedented Move Amid Global Energy Crisis

The International Energy Agency, led by Executive Director Fatih Birol, declared that global energy markets are facing a significant crisis. The agency is set to undertake an unprecedented action in response to escalating tensions caused by the Iran war.

Speaking at a press conference in Istanbul, Birol highlighted the closure of the Strait of Hormuz as a major catalyst for the decision. This strategic choke point is crucial for the transportation of oil worldwide.

The IEA recommended the release of 400 million barrels from global strategic reserves. This coordination among major oil-consuming nations is aimed at alleviating one of the worst oil supply disruptions seen since the oil crises of the 1970s.
