In West Bengal, residents are experiencing escalating panic buying of LPG due to supply disruptions stemming from the West Asia conflict. Despite government assurances, long queues formed on Thursday at LPG stations and local gas agency offices, as consumers attempted to secure cooking gas amid growing uncertainties.
Auto-rickshaw drivers reported extensive wait times for refueling and cited a Rs 5 per kg rise in auto LPG prices, exacerbating their challenges. Meanwhile, online booking systems crashed under the heightened demand, forcing many to queue physically at distributor offices. This crisis has almost doubled daily bookings, straining oil marketing companies' infrastructures.
Restaurants and small eateries are also feeling the pinch, with some reducing menus and cooking times to conserve fuel. Retailers of electric cooking appliances reported increased sales as households sought alternatives. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has directed oil companies to rectify booking servers and ensure priority supply to essential services and households at risk of running out.
