The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has temporarily shut down gas crematoriums in response to a shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), officials announced on Sunday. The shortage stems from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas's directive to prioritize propane and butane for domestic use as the US-Israeli war on Iran disrupts oil and gas exports in the Middle East.
The PMC confirmed that gas crematorium closures commenced on March 5 and will persist until further notice. To minimize public inconvenience, electric crematoriums and wood-fired facilities outfitted with air pollution control systems will continue their operations.
In particular, the Vaikunth crematorium has three gas-fired furnaces temporarily closed, while its five electric furnaces remain available for public use.
