Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar responded on Tuesday to BJP MP Tejasvi Surya's criticism of the proposed Bengaluru tunnel road, advocating for financial backing from the Centre. Shivakumar acknowledged Surya's alternative suggestions but stressed that decisions must be grounded in fiscal feasibility.

During their discussion, Shivakumar noted, "He suggested replacing the tunnel road with a Metro line. We're already progressing on metro projects—funding remains the hurdle." Expressing readiness to engage with the Prime Minister, Shivakumar questioned the extent of financial assistance Bengaluru has so far received from the Centre.

The Deputy CM pointed to local attitudes toward mobility, highlighting a car-centric status significance. He stated, "In our culture, having a car is linked to personal status. Regardless of counsel, financial resources are crucial." Additionally, Shivakumar discussed Congress's pending Legislative Council election preparations, ensuring timely candidate selection and organisational readiness.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya called the conversation "cordial and meaningful," emphasizing prioritization of public transit over automobile infrastructure to effectively tackle Bengaluru's congestion issues. Surya remains a vocal opponent of the tunnel project, citing potential environmental harms and limited public value.
