JBS Faces Climate Lawsuit for Alleged Greenwashing Ahead of Global Talks
Brazil's JBS faces a U.S. lawsuit from advocacy group Mighty Earth for allegedly making false climate claims, a significant 'greenwashing' accusation as global talks approach in Brazil. Mighty Earth asserts that JBS's net-zero by 2040 commitment lacks a credible plan, while JBS defends its sustainability goals.
In a significant legal challenge, Brazil's JBS faces accusations of 'greenwashing' in a U.S. lawsuit filed by advocacy group Mighty Earth. The case, targeting the world's largest meat processor, arrives just as global climate discussions are set to commence in Brazil this November.
The lawsuit, lodged in Washington D.C.’s Superior Court, accuses JBS's U.S. operations of misleading climate claims. This legal move follows similar actions against other corporations, such as TotalEnergies, highlighting ongoing scrutiny over environmental disclosures.
Mighty Earth claims JBS misrepresented its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, undermining the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act. JBS counters these claims, asserting their adherence to science and transparency in progressing toward sustainable food system goals.
