In a bid to empower women and fortify the state's economic backbone, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday officially distributed cheques to 32,482 members of women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under the Mukhyamantrir Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan. The ceremony, held in Nagaon's Kaliabor, was marked by enthusiasm and optimism.
Addressing the gathering at Dr T Ao Stadium, Sarma lauded the transformative journey of Assam's women in recent years. With a current strength of nearly 4 lakh SHGs statewide, Assam has seen women evolve from traditional roles to societal leaders, significantly aided by loans totaling Rs 21,000 crore secured over the past decade.
The Chief Minister further outlined the state's aspiration to nurture 30 lakh 'Lakhpati Baideus', following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision. Sarma's roadmap includes financial incentives for prudent business ventures and expansive government schemes, such as the augmented Orunodoi benefits and proposed legislation against polygamy, aimed at safeguarding women's rights and promoting inclusivity.
