The billionaire owner of Africa's largest refinery, Aliko Dangote, seeks to significantly boost its capacity to meet rising fuel demands within the continent and beyond. The Dangote refinery, located in Lagos, Nigeria, is set to expand from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day.
This ambitious project aims to eclipse India's Jamnagar refinery, currently the largest single-site refinery globally. Nigeria, despite being a top oil producer in Africa, heavily depends on imported refined fuel products due to poorly maintained state-run refineries operating below capacity.
Dangote's refinery, operational since January 2024, has responded to both local and international demands. While this expansion showcases confidence in shaping Africa's energy landscape, details on the expansion's timeline and financial backing remain undisclosed, according to experts from SBM Intelligence.
