Revitalizing Jammu & Kashmir's Handicrafts: A Modern Boost to Traditional Crafts
Jammu and Kashmir has enhanced its handicrafts sector by registering over 4.52 lakh artisans and launching training programs with NIFT. The Union Territory aims to modernize its traditional crafts via training centers, capacity-building initiatives, and financial inclusion measures for artisans and weavers.

Jammu and Kashmir is making strides in the handicrafts sector, registering over 4.52 lakh artisans and introducing comprehensive training programs. Collaborations with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) are at the forefront of these efforts, aiming to blend modern technology with traditional craftsmanship.
Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo chaired a high-level meeting to review progress and future plans. The meeting highlighted efforts such as short-term courses and expanded capacity-building initiatives aimed at revitalizing the crafts ecosystem. Financial initiatives, like the Credit Card Scheme for Artisans, and projects under consideration by the Ministry of Textiles were also discussed.
Key projects include the establishment of a craft village, processing centers, and efforts to secure Geographical Indication (GI) tags. The emphasis remains on integrating modern strategies to boost market competitiveness and ensure sustainable development of local crafts across Jammu and Kashmir.
