In a remarkable social initiative, nearly 1,000 couples from 27 of 30 districts in Odisha were married in mass ceremonies, organizers reported on Tuesday. The state's Department of Women and Child Development spearheaded the event under the Mukhyamantri Kanya Bibaha Yojana, a scheme created to support families struggling with financial challenges or societal pressures when arranging their daughters' marriages.

The scheme provides financial assistance of Rs 60,000 for each eligible beneficiary, with Rs 45,000 directly transferred to their bank accounts. The remaining Rs 15,000 is allocated for wedding arrangements. Such an initiative has proven beneficial to economically challenged families, offering them significant relief.

Prominent figures attended these events, underlining the scheme's impact on curbing social evils such as child marriage and dowry. The Deputy Chief Minister, along with MP Sambit Patra, praised the scheme as a transformative step toward social equity, highlighting its success in offering social recognition and legal security through marriage registration certificates.
