The government of India is embarking on an ambitious project to transform 15 archaeological sites into interactive experience centres, union culture minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat announced on Thursday. This development represents a shift from previous practices where excavation sites were closed post-investigation.
The initiative is part of the recent Union Budget, which allocates funds to enhance public access and engagement at these historical locations. During a session in the Rajya Sabha, minister Shekhawat addressed concerns raised by BJD member Sulata Deo regarding the restoration of monuments within Odisha's Diamond Triangle, an area of great archaeological significance.
Highlighting the importance of the Diamond Triangle, minister Shekhawat noted the recent discovery of a significant Buddha relic in Udayagiri. The site, located near the Bhima and Krishna rivers, offers promising potential for development into a major tourist centre, a point underscored by the Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge's advocacy for the protection of the nearby Buddhist temple.
