In a significant nod to the Sikh community's legacy, a street in New York City has been renamed in honour of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru known for his sacrificial spirit and steadfastness in justice. This renaming underscores the community's cultural contributions to the city.

The announcement by Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, indicates the move as a 'proud moment' for Sikhs worldwide. It draws attention to the sizeable influence of Sikh heritage on New York City's rich cultural tapestry, especially in Richmond Hill where many Sikhs reside.

The renaming ceremony took place during the Diwali weekend, with NYC Council Member Lynn Schulman, who introduced the city council resolution, emphasizing Guru Tegh Bahadur's attributes of compassion and sacrifice. Henceforth, the area at 114th Street and 101st Avenue will be recognized as Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg Way.
