A recent report has revealed a significant awareness of artificial intelligence (AI) among high school students in Mumbai, yet an evident gap in understanding persists. Conducted by Salaam Bombay Foundation and NMIMS Mumbai, the study found that while eight out of ten students are aware of AI, their knowledge stems more from exposure than formal education.
The reliance on AI tools for tasks like solving math problems and completing homework is highlighted, raising concerns over reduced critical thinking and student-teacher interactions. The report underscores a gender disparity, with boys showing higher AI knowledge and dependence. Teachers recognize AI's evolving importance but face challenges in blending it with traditional methods due to lack of training and resources.
To address these issues, the report advocates for the Gateway to AI for Transformative and Equitable Education framework, promoting a standardized AI curriculum and teacher training while urging policy guidance to safely integrate AI into learning environments. Engaging the government for expanded reach ensures AI education benefits all students.
