Unequal Access: Educational Divide Among Castes in Telangana Revealed

A recent caste survey in Telangana, covering 56 major castes, has highlighted disparities in accessing English medium education among the youth. While an average of 47% of those under 30 study in English, there is a stark contrast between communities, with 72% of OC Brahmins and Komatis having such access compared to just 11% for ST Kolams.

The survey, analyzed by the Independent Expert Working Group led by former Supreme Court judge Justice B Sudershan Reddy, also introduced the Education Backwardness Index. This index revealed a high educational attainment for OC Jains, whereas BC Oddes are on the lower end of the educational spectrum.

Moreover, the report sheds light on the financial hardships faced by certain groups, with significant portions of the Scheduled Castes, Tribes, and Other Backward Classes being susceptible to severe economic strains due to unexpected medical expenses or family weddings, along with a high incidence of female-headed households among these communities.
