In a startling revelation, a caste survey conducted by the Congress government in Telangana for 2024-25 has unveiled that 5%, or approximately 2.16 lakh, girls below the age of 18 are married. This data sheds light on the enduring practice of child marriage in the region.
The survey highlights the prevalence of child marriages among certain caste groups, with Iyengars/Iyers and Jains recording rates significantly above the state average. Concurrently, it exposes educational disparities, predominantly affecting tribal and scheduled caste women who struggle to surpass secondary education.
This stark educational divide underscores the need for targeted interventions aimed at specific sub-castes to bridge these socio-economic gaps and enhance educational accessibility for marginalized communities.
