Ryanair Grounds Berlin Base: A Shift in European Skies
Ryanair announced it will close its Berlin base, cutting flights by 50% due to high fees. The airline will relocate its aircraft to less costly European locations and offers alternative jobs to its Berlin-based crew. This move highlights long-standing concerns over Germany's high aviation taxes.

Low-cost airline giant Ryanair has revealed plans to close its base in Berlin, effective October 24, drastically reducing its services to and from the German capital by 50%. The strategic move comes in response to soaring local taxes and fees.
In an official statement, the Ireland-headquartered carrier explained that all its Berlin-based fleet will be repositioned to more economically viable airports in countries like Sweden, Slovakia, Albania, and Italy. However, opportunities within Ryanair's expansive network will still be available for the affected pilots and cabin crew.
This decision is part of a larger industry discontent over the cost of operating in Germany, with numerous international airlines echoing Ryanair's concerns. Notably, a government-approved measure to roll back air traffic tax levels from July aims to alleviate some of these financial burdens by May 2024.
