In response to the West Asia crisis impacting critical shipments, the government is contemplating significant economic adjustments. An official from the commerce and industry ministry revealed plans to cut customs duty on essential induction cooktop components to stimulate domestic manufacturing. Furthermore, the ministry is advocating a reduction of GST from 18% to 5% to make these essential devices more affordable for the populace.
The crisis has notably disrupted shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, exacerbating concerns over cooking gas supplies. This disruption has spurred a surge in demand for induction cooktops, prompting swift action from the government. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is actively collaborating with relevant ministries to tackle demand-supply challenges within the induction cooktop sector. As part of these measures, the government extended the timeline for implementing mandatory quality control orders and energy efficiency mandates for electrical appliances.
Joint Secretary Nidhi Kesarwani of DPIIT emphasized ongoing initiatives to ensure consistent fuel availability during the crisis. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO) has accelerated the licensing process for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Compressed Biogas (CBG) dispensing stations, subsequently approving several new facilities. Long-term strategies focus on promoting alternative fuel sources and enhancing infrastructure across the country.
