Ethiopian Airlines, Africa's largest carrier, announced on Monday a major expansion by purchasing six additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner jets. The airline aims to widen its long-haul flight network across Africa, the U.S., Europe, and Asia. CEO Mesfin Tasew revealed the plans in a ceremony at Boeing's headquarters near Washington, highlighting the conversion of previous options to firm orders after having ordered 20 new 787s earlier this year.

The new jets will begin arriving in 2028, as Ethiopian Airlines seeks to enhance its service on mature and underserved routes, including those in Africa and Australia. The U.S. administration, present at the signing, has prioritized boosting Boeing exports as part of American trade policy.

Alongside its fleet expansion, Ethiopian Airlines is investing $12.5 billion in constructing Africa's biggest airport, slated for completion in 2030 in Bishoftu, near Addis Ababa. Envisioned to handle 60 million passengers annually, the airport will feature ultra-modern facilities. Supported by the African Development Bank and U.S. financial institutions, this project aims to elevate Ethiopia as a key player in global aviation, akin to Dubai or Istanbul.
