Global energy markets witnessed a significant shift on Friday when oil prices plunged as Iran announced the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime chokepoint. This development follows a period of elevated tensions between Washington and Tehran, which had driven a steep 'war-risk' premium into oil prices.

The announcement came on the heels of a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. Iran's declaration of an open Strait, crucial for commercial transit, helped slashed the Brent crude benchmark by 11% to approximately $88 per barrel. Concurrently, US West Texas Intermediate saw a 10% drop, reaching $81.5 per barrel, as traders adjusted to the shifting geopolitical circumstances.

US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to confirm the news, thanking Iran for reopening the Strait and indicating a reduction in regional tensions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi corroborated the reopening, linking it to regional stability initiatives following the Lebanon truce. The Strait of Hormuz, which handles 20% of the world's oil supply, had been a focal point amid recent tensions, threatening global supply chains.

The price dip offers relief for energy-importing nations, particularly India, which imports nearly 89% of its crude oil. Maintaining open traffic in the Strait is crucial for stabilizing energy distribution and easing inflationary pressures across Asian and European markets. Despite this optimism, experts caution that lasting stability hinges on the enduring effectiveness of the ceasefire and the avoidance of renewed maritime disputes in the sensitive Gulf region.
