The BJD and Congress have openly opposed the Railway Board's recent decision to transfer the Palasa-Ichchapuram section from the East Coast Railway (ECoR) to the newly formed South Coast Railway (SCoR). They argue that this change jeopardizes Odisha's financial interests and regional influence over railway development.
In a letter to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, BJD MP Sasmit Patra highlighted that Odisha significantly contributes to Indian Railways' earnings and warned that the jurisdiction shift could cause financial losses. Patra urged a rollback of the decision, emphasizing the need for consultation with Odisha's state representatives.
Congress leader Bhakta Charan Das termed the move as 'step-motherly treatment' towards Odisha, while BJP leaders expressed concerns about the impact on regional logistics and revenue. The issue has prompted calls for further negotiation and reconsideration by the Railway Board.
