EU Imposes Sanctions on Cyberattackers
The European Union has sanctioned two China-based companies and an Iranian company for cyberattacks against EU member states. These entities have been accused of enabling hacks and spreading disinformation, prompting asset freezes and travel bans. China opposes the sanctions, urging Brussels to reconsider.
The European Union took decisive action on Monday, sanctioning two Chinese companies and one Iranian company for their involvement in cyberattacks against member states. The targeted entities include Integrity Technology Group and Anxun Information Technology from China, as well as Iran's Emennet Pasargad.
China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has voiced strong opposition to the sanctions, encouraging EU officials to reassess their stance. Meanwhile, the EU claims that Integrity Technology facilitated hacks on over 65,000 devices across six member states, while Anxun provided hacking services targeting critical infrastructure.
The sanctions, which comprise asset freezes and travel bans, also extend to two co-founders of Anxun. Additionally, Emennet is alleged to have used advertising billboards to disseminate disinformation during the 2024 Paris Olympics. EU citizens and companies are barred from financially engaging with these sanctioned companies.
