India Collaborates Globally to Regulate Booming Nutraceuticals Industry

India is actively engaging with international regulatory bodies, including the Codex Alimentarius Commission, to establish comprehensive regulations for its burgeoning nutraceutical industry. Food Processing Industries Minister Chirag Paswan emphasized the sector's growth potential during an Assocham event on Tuesday.

Paswan highlighted the importance of formal regulations to support the industry's expansion. He indicated ongoing collaboration with international entities to create a robust regulatory framework. This framework aims to address the new industry's massive scope, encouraging necessary reforms and policies.

Paswan confirmed that the government is committed to bridging current gaps in the sector while prioritizing nutritional security alongside food security. Nutraceuticals mainly fall within the jurisdiction of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the 2006 Act. The 2016 regulations mandate FSSAI licenses for manufacturing and sales, strict labeling, and prohibit genetically modified ingredients.
