The Trump administration has announced two significant trade investigations aimed at 16 major trading partners, targeting issues of industrial overcapacity and forced labor. These probes come in response to the Supreme Court nullifying much of former President Trump's tariff program last month.

Countries such as China, the European Union, and Japan are under scrutiny and may face new tariffs by summer as part of the Section 301 investigation into unfair trade practices, according to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. China has dismissed the claims of overcapacity, accusing the U.S. of 'political manipulation.'

The administration is also examining forced labor practices in more than 60 countries, following actions under the Uyghur Forced Labor Protection Act. These investigations serve to bolster U.S. leverage in upcoming trade negotiations, especially with plans for Trump to engage with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month.
