In a progressive move for the aviation sector, the Indian government is making significant strides by opening its market to international operators, according to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers. Speaking at the Aviation India and South Asia 2025 conference, Elbers dismissed claims that India is restricting bilateral flying rights to overseas carriers as 'just wrong.'

Elbers highlighted the substantial potential for direct international flights from India, backed by IndiGo's substantial investments in aircraft and infrastructure. The airline currently boasts a fleet of over 400 planes, operating more than 2,200 flights daily, and has rapidly expanded its international presence.

Addressing concerns from international, particularly Gulf carriers, about bilateral rights, Elbers stressed that India allocates traffic rights sensibly. With a focus on balanced growth, IndiGo plans further international expansion, having recently introduced flights to destinations like London, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Manchester.
