In a groundbreaking achievement, Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital in Madurai has become India's greenest hospital, earning the prestigious LEED Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This recognition makes it the first healthcare institution in the country to receive such an accolade for excellence in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, developed by the USGBC, is a globally recognized green building rating system. It awards four certification levels: Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, with the latter being the highest. Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital achieved 83 points under the LEED v4 Healthcare category, excelling in areas such as energy and water efficiency, sustainable material usage, waste management, and healthy indoor environments.
Congratulating the hospital, Tamil Nadu's Health Minister Thiru Maa. Subramanian noted this achievement as a proud moment for the state and the nation, highlighting its potential to set global standards in sustainability and innovation in healthcare. Dr. S. Gurushankar, Chairman of Meenakshi Mission Hospital, emphasized the critical value of green building practices amidst rising energy demands and environmental challenges.
