The government has extended the deadline for implementing SIM-binding requirements for mobile messaging applications to December 31 in response to industry feedback, according to sources. The new guideline mandates that messaging services such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal can continue operating only if linked to an active SIM card.

In addition, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has modified the rule requiring users to log out from web versions of these apps every six hours, transitioning instead to a risk analysis-based log-out system. This measure is part of wider efforts to close security loopholes used by cybercriminals in India and abroad.

Despite the government's digital security intentions, industry bodies like the Broadband India Forum and think tanks have voiced concerns about the mandate, questioning its legality and feasibility. Reports indicate a significant portion of users anticipate operational disruptions, with many relying on shared devices for messaging services.
