Germany's F-35 Ambitions: A Strategic Pivot from European Defense Autonomy
Germany is contemplating acquiring more U.S. F-35 fighter jets, potentially deepening its reliance on American military tech amid stalled progress with France on the Future Combat Air System. This move could signify a strategic shift from European defense autonomy as Berlin explores new defense partnerships.
Germany is in discussions to possibly purchase additional U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets, sources revealed to Reuters. This move suggests a growing reliance on American military technology as Germany's collaboration with France on the FCAS program faces setbacks. The negotiations could result in an order exceeding 35 units, although outcomes remain uncertain.
In 2022, Germany made an initial purchase for 35 F-35 jets, with deliveries slated to start later this year. This acquisition comes in the wake of stalling progress with France's Future Combat Air System, as rival industrial interests hinder advancements. While Germany and France may halt joint fighter development, cooperation continues on drones and a digital combat network.
With potential new purchases, Germany seeks time to develop a sixth-generation fighter. An expanded F-35 fleet would mark a strategic realignment towards U.S. military integration, moving away from the European defense independence cherished by France. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius anticipates clarity on FCAS within days.
