A Dutch court has mandated Meta Platforms to enable Facebook and Instagram users to more easily opt out of algorithmically curated timelines. This ruling demands adjustment to the platforms' timelines to comply with the European Union's Digital Services Act, which aims to boost user control over data and content presentation.
The District Court of Amsterdam criticized the platforms' design for misalignment with new EU regulations and ordered Meta to provide a "direct and simple" opt-out option for curated content. This decision will ensure that user preferences stick once they opt out of algorithmic feeds.
Meta, appealing the verdict, sought more time for implementation but is bound by the new December 31 deadline. A follow-up hearing for this appeal is scheduled for January 26, 2026.
