England appoints Brian McDermott as new head coach for Rugby League World Cup, following Shaun Wane's exit. McDermott, a seasoned coach, seeks to instill high standards and belief in the team. The tournament kicks off on October 15, with England's first match against Tonga scheduled for October 17.
England has named four-time Super League Grand Final-winning coach Brian McDermott as its new head coach for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup in Australia. He replaces Shaun Wane, who stepped down in January.
McDermott, aged 56, brings a wealth of experience from his successful tenure at Leeds Rhinos. 'I’ve always been hands-on and close to the detail, which will be crucial in this role,' he expressed in a statement from the Rugby Football League (RFL) on Thursday. 'My mission now is to set the right standards, cultivate belief within the group, and ensure we're ready when the moments count.'
The 17th World Cup edition spans from October 15 to November 15. England's campaign kicks off against Tonga in Perth on October 17, followed by matches against France and Papua New Guinea.
