The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has made a strategic move by appointing three foreign coaches and a High Performance Director to enhance the national wrestling camps, aiming to boost preparations for the Asian Games and the 2028 Olympics. This marks a return to overseas expertise after several years, as the WFI seeks to leverage global knowledge and skills to elevate Indian wrestling on the international stage.
Appointed as the new specialist coaches are Georgia's Emzarios Shako Bentinidis for freestyle, Russia's Gogi Koguashvili for Greco-Roman, and Japan's Kosei Akaishi for women's wrestling. Additionally, American Ian Butler has taken on the role of High Performance Director. The team is set to join the national camps by May 1, with each receiving a monthly salary of USD 7000, following their selection by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Indian coaches in an online meeting.
This initiative reflects WFI's commitment to a more collaborative approach, merging foreign expertise with local insights to foster a well-rounded development program. With an eye on future successes, the establishment of a structured high-performance environment is anticipated to significantly enhance India's medal prospects at the continental and global levels.
