Marketa Vondrousova, the former Wimbledon champion, candidly shared her experiences with mental health complications following a December doping control incident. Vondrousova, who clinched the Wimbledon title in 2023, disclosed that she suffered an Acute Stress Reaction triggered by a severe breach of privacy when a doping officer demanded an immediate test.
Opening up on Instagram, the 26-year-old athlete expressed the challenges of dealing with injuries, relentless pressure, and sleep disturbances that left her feeling unstable. Vondrousova was reminded of fellow tennis player Petra Kvitova's traumatic experience with an intruder, emphasizing the fear she felt when confronted by a stranger late at night.
Diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Vondrousova is focused on regaining stability in her personal and professional life. Despite withdrawing from the Australian Open due to a shoulder injury, she plans to return for the Madrid Open. Reuters reached out to the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for further comments.
