In a dramatic turn of events, Senegal has been stripped of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title that they secured in January, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) now awarding the victory to Morocco, runners-up in the intense final held at Rabat. The decision was influenced by Senegal's controversial conduct during the match, led by Sadio Mane, which they originally won 1-0 in extra time.
According to Goal.com, the match's final moments were marred by protests from Senegalese players who were frustrated over a denied penalty. The situation escalated when the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) controversially awarded a penalty to Morocco for a similar challenge, enraging the visitors. In response, Senegal's players, except for their captain, left the field for 20 minutes in protest, only returning after Mane's persuasion. Brahim Diaz took the penalty for Morocco, but it was saved by the keeper, and the game continued into extra time where Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal for Senegal.
Following the unrest, CAF issued a statement condemning the unsportsmanlike behaviors exhibited by some players and officials from the Senegal team during the final match. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also criticized the conduct, underscoring the importance of maintaining integrity and setting a positive example for football fans globally. Infantino's remarks emphasized the unacceptable nature of the events and the need for disciplinary measures.
On Tuesday, the CAF Appeals Committee decided on the appeal made by the Moroccan Football Federation post-final. The committee's ruling officially overturned Senegal's 1-0 victory, granting Morocco a default 3-0 win. This decision was attributed to Senegal's violation of AFCON regulations, specifically Articles 82 and 84. These articles highlight that leaving the pitch before the referee's official end of the match is considered a forfeit, thus costing Senegal the title.
