During the final practice session before the Australian Grand Prix qualifying, Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli crashed, while teammate George Russell clocked the fastest time. The practice included delays from incidents and showcased the teams' adaptation to new Formula One power unit regulations, highlighting the sport's evolving technical landscape.
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli experienced a high-impact crash during the final practice session for the Australian Grand Prix, as his teammate George Russell posted the fastest time on the leaderboard. The practice started with a delay due to a preceding Formula 3 incident.
Antonelli crashed at turn two, causing team boss Toto Wolff to grimace as the front wheel detached and bounced away. The Italian reported he was unhurt over team radio, prompting the session to halt with a red flag before resuming for Russell to clock a leading time of 1:19.053.
The session marked a critical opportunity for teams to adapt to the new Formula One power unit regulations. This includes increased focus on electrical energy deployment. Despite hurdles, multiple drivers, including home favorite Oscar Piastri and champion Max Verstappen, endeavored to make the most of the session.
