In a remarkable infrastructure shift, Indian Railways has nearly completed electrifying its Broad Gauge network. This milestone dramatically cuts the nation's dependency on imported diesel, with 99.4% of the railway network now running on electricity. As a result, Indian Railways has positioned itself as a global leader amidst transformative energy transitions.
By electrifying its extensive rail network, Indian Railways saved 178 crore litres of diesel in the financial year 2024-25, translating to a 62% reduction in diesel use compared to 2016-17. The bulk of India's train operations have shifted to electric traction, harnessing a diversified electricity mix from coal, hydro, solar, and renewables. Consequently, in 2024-25, the railway's energy spend amounted to Rs 32,378 crore, predominantly on electricity.
This near-total electrification not only represents a significant infrastructure milestone but also serves as a strategic step towards national energy independence. Amid escalating geopolitical tensions affecting global oil supplies, the development secures uninterrupted mobility for passengers and freight, underscoring India's strengthened position in energy reliability and sustainability.
