Indian Super League's New Format Gains Continental Recognition

In a recent development, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) revealed that the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has granted recognition to the adjusted format of the 2025-26 Indian Super League (ISL). This new format includes a truncated season and indirect slots for the Asian Champions League 2.

The season's delayed start means clubs can't play the required 24 matches needed for the AFC Champions League 2 eligibility. Instead, clubs are set to play 16 matches. To accommodate these circumstances, AIFF Deputy Secretary General M. Satyanarayan has formally requested a one-time exemption from the AFC.

This decision follows the stagnation of the ISL's schedule due to uncertainties with the commercial partner FSDL. With the new format now in place, the AIFF aims to reassure stakeholders and revitalize Indian football amid ongoing challenges.
