The Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh has achieved a significant milestone by being designated as a Ramsar site, making it India's 99th and the state's 12th. This information was revealed by Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav via a social media post on Wednesday.
'Uttar Pradesh takes the score to 99!' said Yadav, while announcing the designation. He emphasized that this development not only enhances local livelihoods but also supports global biodiversity and strengthens both water and climate security.
As a Ramsar site, Shekha Jheel becomes a vital habitat for migratory birds like the bar-headed goose and painted stork during winter. The Ramsar Convention, established in 1971, remains a pioneering international treaty aimed at the conservation of wetlands worldwide.
